Withings Sleep Mat

About#

The Withings sleep mat is a thin pressure-sensing mat placed under the participant's mattress at the level of the torso. It detects body pressure, movement, and ballistic signals to quantify time in bed, time asleep, and related sleep measures without anything being worn. The mat runs on mains power (not battery) and must stay plugged into a wall outlet throughout the recording period. It activates automatically when pressure is detected and requires no action from the family once set up. The mat connects to the study iPhone via the Withings Health Mate app and uploads data directly to the Withings server, allowing recordings to be checked remotely each morning. Families will be provided with illustrated setup instructions to ensure standardized placement.

The mat records pressure, heart rate, movement, and sleep-wake classification at one measurement per minute, made available as processed summary measures in a nightly CSV file. Because it cannot be removed during the night, the mat verifies time in bed through pressure detection rather than movement or physiological signals alone, providing valuable complementary information for participants who may remove the wearable devices during sleep. We will use the metrics and data as available from Withings to calculate standardized sleep variables, including TST, WASO, and sleep efficiency
