Muse EEG Headband / Sleep EEG
About#
The Muse S Athena EEG headband (Interaxon Inc) is a dry-electrode wearable designed for low-density EEG recording in home settings. It will be used to record overnight EEG from four frontal channels at 250 Hz Families will be instructed to place the device on the participant when the child is ready to sleep, remove it upon waking, and charge it during the day. The headband transmits data to the Muse app on the study device, which uploads to the Muse server, allowing recordings to be checked remotely.
Raw EEG will be used for analysis. We will generate a hypnogram from the raw EEG data (using U-Sleep or another research-validated hypnogram tool), producing standard four-stage classification (N1, N2, N3, REM). Primary sleep architecture outcomes derived from the hypnogram will include total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE), sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and time spent in each sleep stage, expressed in minutes and as a percentage of TST. Because families activate the device only when the child is ready to sleep, SOL (calculated as the time from recording initiation to sleep onset) provides a valid index of time-to-sleep-onset not obtainable from the Axivity or Withings devices.
